Bavaria is the largest state and the most visited. The south belongs to the Alps, the middle to lakes and baroque monasteries, the north to Franconian wine and beer cellars. That is too much for one week - most people pick a corner and stay in it. In the Alps, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the best known base, with the Zugspitze and the Partnach gorge on its doorstep. Oberstdorf in the Allgäu and Berchtesgaden on the Königssee are quieter and usually cheaper. Neuschwanstein Castle stands above Schwangau; most visitors sleep in nearby Füssen and drive the last few kilometres in the morning. Munich is the most expensive city in the state, and during Oktoberfest rates multiply - if you are coming in September and not going to the beer tents, stay outside the city. Franconia is the counterweight: Nuremberg, Bamberg with its old town never bombed, Würzburg below the Residenz and walled Rothenburg ob der Tauber all cost considerably less. Nuremberg, Bamberg and Würzburg sit on main lines; Rothenburg means changing to the branch train at Steinach. Regensburg and Passau on the Danube are the obvious stops heading east.

We list 1,056 hotels across 485 towns in Bavaria. A room costs around 105 EUR a night here, and the cheapest beds start at 27 EUR. The cheapest we found is Wombat's City Hostel Munich Werksviertel.
