Rhineland-Palatinate is wine country. Two river valleys define the state, and both are lined with castles, steep vineyards and villages that live off them. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site and begins at Koblenz, where the Moselle meets the Rhine. The Moselle itself winds past Cochem below its hilltop castle and Bernkastel-Kues, which has the most photographed market square in the region. Trier on the upper Moselle was a Roman imperial residence; the Porta Nigra, the amphitheatre and the imperial baths all still stand and are World Heritage together. Speyer and Worms have Romanesque imperial cathedrals, and Speyer’s is World Heritage too. Mainz is the state capital and the city where Gutenberg printed his bible. The Nürburgring is in the Eifel hills, and on race weekends Nürburg and Adenau sell out months ahead.
