Best Hotels in Saarbrücken
From budget-friendly to luxury
Saarland is the smallest state by area and sits close enough to France that you notice it in the food and the place names. You can drive end to end in about an hour, which makes it the one state you can see properly from a single base. Saarbrücken is the capital and the only sizeable city; the baroque Ludwigsplatz and the old town on the river sit next to each other, and Metz or Luxembourg are closer from here than Frankfurt. The Saar loop at Mettlach is the emblem of the state: an almost complete bend in the river, seen from a treetop walkway above the slope. Merzig is nearby on the Saar, and Saarlouis was founded by Louis XIV as a fortress town and still carries his name - the outline of the Vauban fortifications is visible in the street plan.
