From budget-friendly to luxury
Saxony-Anhalt holds more UNESCO World Heritage than its profile suggests. The sites are spread far apart, but each one is small enough for half a day. Quedlinburg is built almost entirely of timber framing - over a thousand houses spanning six centuries, plus the collegiate church on the castle hill, all inscribed together. Naumburg has the cathedral with its famous founder statues, added to the list in 2018, and Magdeburg, the state capital, the first Gothic cathedral built on German soil. The Reformation began in Wittenberg in 1517; Luther’s house and the castle church are World Heritage, and every June the town spends three days celebrating Luther’s wedding. The Harz mountains start at Wernigerode, where a narrow-gauge steam railway climbs to the Brocken. Thale sits at the mouth of the Bode gorge, the deepest in northern Germany.
