Best Hotels in Kiel
From budget-friendly to luxury
Schleswig-Holstein is the narrow strip between the North Sea and the Baltic, and which coast you pick decides the holiday. The North Sea gives you tidal flats, wind and low tide; the Baltic calm water and wicker beach chairs. On the North Sea, Sylt is the best known and by far the most expensive island - reached over the Hindenburg causeway, where cars cross by train. Sankt Peter-Ording has the widest beach in the country and its stilt houses, and Husum the harbour Theodor Storm called the grey town by the sea. On the Baltic side is Lübeck: the Holsten Gate and the old town on its island are UNESCO World Heritage, and the marzipan has come from here since the nineteenth century. Kiel fills up every June for Kieler Woche, the largest sailing event in the world - the city is effectively sold out that week. Timmendorfer Strand is the classic seaside resort, and Flensburg at the top is already half Danish. Outside summer, prices on both coasts drop sharply.
