Hefaiston, celebrated at the Helfštýn castle in the Czech Republic, is an annual and international gathering that marks a significant spot on the calendar for blacksmiths worldwide. Established in 1982 and named after the Greek god Hephaestus, this festival has become one of the most crucial meetings for artist blacksmiths globally. The event, coordinated by the Comenius Museum in Přerov alongside the castle's administration, has seen participation from over four hundred blacksmiths, including attendees from as far as Japan, Argentina, Canada, Israel, and Uzbekistan. The Hefaiston is renowned for its Blacksmith Forum, a workshop held a week before the competition, allowing blacksmiths to bring their designs to life, which are later displayed and judged during the event.
The competition at Hefaiston offers categories for works created at Helfštýn as well as those brought to the venue, evaluated by an expert jury. Besides the competition, Hefaiston boasts a rich program including historical exhibitions, live demonstrations, and seminars, making it not only a competition but a comprehensive celebration of blacksmithing art. This convergence of talent, artistry, and heritage makes Hefaiston a pivotal event that continues to foster the craft and community of blacksmithing across the globe.
